Cause of RVN network difficulty spike back in early 2020?

Only started mining in Jan of this year so not familiar with the history prior to that but would be intrigued to know what caused the difficulty to spike to just under 500k between Jan 2020 – May 2020. Also why such a sudden drop off back to around 50k?
