Serious question about what’s special about Eth

I understand the importance of smart contracts and know Ethereum was the pioneer. However, there's cosmos, fantom, etc. Which in my limited knowledge can do the same thing. Ive never really understood what makes Eth so special, and am looking for some enlightenment. So what makes it stand out from other smart contract cryptos?
