What does it mean that the Ethereum network can be used for “thousands of other applications”?

My buddy keeps talking about how Ethereum is not just a currency to be traded but rather way more than that. It can be used for "thousands of other applications".

What does this mean exactly? What are some hard examples? I'm sorry if this has been asked before.
