Does anyone use x1 pcie risers plugged into x16 slots?

So I have like a $200 mobo, 3 x16 slots (two 3.0 one 4.0) and I know GPUs are backwards compatible so 3.0 and 4.0 dont matter, but I have no pcie x1 slots, and I dont like using these m.2 adapters (plus I cant get one of the m.2 slots recognizing something plugged into it). I found a few different things saying it is okay to have x1 into x16, but I'd like to know if anyone is doing this.
