Unclear on the matter of fees

Can someone clarify how the fees work, what they are, how they change, etc? I read something about the recommended fee being 0.01 RVN/kB. What exactly does that mean? Am I wrong in thinking any transaction is going to cost at least 0.01 rvn? Isn't the satoshi for ravencoin less than that? Wouldn't that make everything under 0.01 rvn pointless?
