How to stop/pause mining?

I'm trying out mining for the first time, using Kawpowminer following this guide I found online.

I have everything set up and the miner is running smoothly, but I'm not sure how to stop/pause mining? Does the program need to be stopped a "safe" way to keep the mined coins?

Apologies if I'm missing something obvious!
