I keep hearing (uneducated) people say crypto is mainly used for illicit activities and it should therefore be boycotted. But they forget that the same cash they use is the main choice for funding illegal activities.

I just read an article about bitcoin in a local newspaper. While the newspaper itself was very critical towards bitcoin, the comments were nearly unanimous. „Bitcoin is mainly used for money laundering“, „Crypto is a safe haven for illicit activity“ etc… But in fact, bitcoin‘s usage in illegal transaction has declined and accounts for less than 1% of all transactions. The narrative of cryptocurrencies being mainly used in the darknet is probably as old as bitcoin itself. What does it take, to finally lose this outdated view? Illicit transactions only make up a fraction of all transactions. Also, they seem to forget that the same cash they use is still the first choice for criminals. No need to boycott it because of this, is it?
