I received news that someone back home in Lebanon was ambushed and beaten; he later passed away.

The guy came back to his country with $400,000 on him. He did the right thing by declaring the money at customs. Result: people were waiting for him outside.

Portability is a major advantage of crypto, especially when you have a corrupted country.

1. Why didn't he just wire the money?

In Lebanon, and thanks to theives (politicians), the country is in dire economic situation. If you have $USD in your bank, it could take years to withdraw the amount. Liquidity is an issue.

I don't know in this specific case, but I'm guessing he is an expat who decided to come home after saving enough money to have a decent life / retirement.
