How are merkle proofs made in modified merkle patricia tries?

I always see diagrams of MMPTs, and they always just show it deriving the root from the first extension node. How does the first extension node have enough data to prove the validity of some item in the MMPT? AFAIK all the root node contains is just some shared nibble.
