*Preparing Ubuntu 20.04 to work with AMD drivers to mine RVN* * medium-level Linux knowledge*

This whole guide assumes I don't have to tell you how to google these things, clone into repositories, configure, build and install. If I do, well I can kinda help, but this took a lot of time and researching on my part to learn this… you will need to put in the time as well 🙂 Mining is worth it though!

Something is broken with some of the newer distros of Ubuntu and AMD so this is the way I've gotten kawpowminer up and running with AMD RX580.

  1. Install Ubuntu 20.04 Focal Fossa from USB.
  2. Update all software except the Ubuntu base *and* any video card Nvidia or AMD/Radeon software- (that'll be soon).
  3. Install Git, Cmake, Build-essential, Nvidia-Cuda-Toolkit for Nvidia cards or AMD-Pro for Focal Fossa 20.04 (amd-pro-uninstall first then reinstall the fresh drivers) for OpenCL AMD cards
  4. Install gcc and g++ 8 and change both versions to 8.
  5. Clone into kawpowminer, config, cmake, make install. You will get an error that says you need to…
  6. Fix CmakeLists to link to nvrtc and nvidia-toolkit directories (if you need a copy of mine I will paste it)
  7. Install Radeon Profile- a fan utility to control several options for AMD cards but most notably, the fan control and undervolting- kawpow runs hot and needs the fan control to keep it cool.

I made this list after a month of trial and error of redoing all of this to make it work smoothly. Nvidia works nearly the same, except you're going to need to install nvidia-cuda-toolkit to make it work. I know this is all pretty general directions so if you get stuck let me know, it's not easy to get a stable miner running with the newer distros of Linux, which is why Ubuntu 20.04 works the best. Even with some of the other miners that are over a decade old.
