Ethereum transactions are getting stuck. Any tips?

Hoping someone here can help me with my ETH transactions. Today, I sent an ETH transaction using Ledger with 40 Gwei. It was pending for about 2 hours, so I followed the instructions on MEW to cancel the transaction by sending a 0 ETH transaction to myself with the same nonce but using 54 Gwei, which at the time was supposed to be on the higher end according to gastracker . But now that transaction has been pending for quite a while as well. Is there something going on right now or am I doing something wrong? I've sent ETH transactions in the past with no problems, so this is a little weird to me.
