How do L2s and sidechains affect the price of Ethereum?

I am confused as to how we can keep value on the Ethereum ecosystem but scale it at the same time?

My main area of a pickle I am in is the differences between L2s and sidechains?

Can someone point me in the right direction of an article to check out?
