Better to trade pairs or individual markets?

If I was thinking of selling some BTC and buying more ETH is it better to do the trade on ETH/BTC market or sell BTC for $ and then buy the ETH? Seems obvious the former would be the case, but my maths is getting me confused… probably because I am still thinking in fiat and converting the 2.
