Why ASIC resistance is a concern in Ethereum community?

I understand ASIC resistance is touted up to reign in Miners. But as a EE i feel that its as fruitless as Trumps attempt to build a wall. Also I would like to know if we are going to go down that route why miner equipment standardization is not being attempted in ETH community rather than working on staking mechanism involving ETH we can attempt at staking mechanisms with tolerances/limits on equipment requirements if we are going down that route.
