Will ethereum 2.0 make the ethereum we already have obsolete? (Question from a crypto beginner, pls explain this to me patiently)

I’m very new to ethereum and just recently bought my own ethereum with which I am very happy, because I’m very convinced in the technology and it also went up in value. However I am interested in how Ethereum 2.0 works and if it will make ethereum obsolete or if it is an addition to the blockchain of ethereum.
