How much does it cost to deploy a smart contract to the mainnet?

Hi everyone,

I've been messing around with tokens and wanted to try to deploy my own smart contract. I got far enough to deploy using metamask, but it's roughly $500? Is that expected?

If it is, I'm curious why it costs so much, and if there are any workarounds. Thanks.
