Noob gas question

I saw an NFT for sale at 0.16 ETH. I have 0.2 so was excited to buy it. It said the gas fee was over $1K. I thought it was a mistake but I tried again and it was still over 1k. Is that how high gas fees are? Never bought anything before with it.
