ETH hard forks and the 2.0 merge

Trying to come to speed on crypto in general, and I’ve tried reading on this, but apparently I need a 5-yr old explanation. I get what a hard fork is, and I get the pint of 2.0. What I’m not completely clear on is what happens to my existing ETH, now residing on CP Pro when all this happens.
