exchanging ether and gas fees

Can somebody help me with understanding this. Im seeing alot of posts about it costing 100's to swap or buy ether. i just checked a few of the apps im using and there is no fees to swap a coin to ether or to swap ether for a different coin ? am i missing something here ?
