Cause of Ethereum increase?

I'm still trying to wrap my head around Ethereum and all the tech associated. I'm just wondering what drives the recent ether price increases? Is it increased volume of traffic on the network? Higher demand? I read recently it had something to do with layer 2 implementation but I'm not too sure how valid that is.
