Gas fee’s questions, I’m new to this

The fees are high nobody likes to pay so much for a simple transaction, my question is what if I lower them manually because I'm not in any rush. Can I make a transaction run for days until it confirms? or does it cancel itself after a day? or it's in a never-ending loop?
